It benefits Malawi. Aside from simply buying one of Malawi's best products and bringing it to the world, by selling Nali Sauces we want to make sure that some tangible benefit returns to Malawi.
Being one of the poorest countries in the world, it is at the grass-roots level that change can be made. In particular, small-holder and village level agriculture has the opportuntiy to provide food, economic, health and education benefits. If just one person benefits, that is enough (but obviously we'd love to help more!).
This approach is particularly fitting as the producer of Nali Sauces ensures that it's key ingredient, chillis, are sourced from more than 3,000 small-holder farmers across Malawi.
Over time, we will consider a range of options for our charitable donations. Our valued customers will also have a say.
The very first organisation to benefit from the sale of Nali Sauces will be the National Rural Poultry Centre (NRPC).
Village poultry are an integral part of rural life in Malawi. They are everywhere. Anyone in the village might own a chicken. Even an impoverished widow, with little chance of owning anything as valuable as a goat or a pig, still has a good chance of owning a chicken. Thus, improvements in production of village poultry benefit everybody in the village, irrespective of their status.
And yes, there is an ocean of opportunity to improve: control of diseases, better housing, better nutrition, better breeding, better management! In each of these aspects there are gaps and constraints where dedicated input can achieve real progress, real benefits.
Because village poultry are owned by people from a wide range of the poverty spectrum, improvements in health and production of village poultry provide benefits to people that include the poorest farmers. NRPC has adopted a keep-it-simple philosophy with an emphasis on effective support at the grass roots level.
We have had personal contact with the staff at NRPC (and it's sister organisation, Small Scale Livestock and Livelihoods Program or SSLLP) and can vouch for their bona fides. So, from every bottle of Nali Sauce sold, $1 will go directly to NRPC in support of its work. Learn more about NRPC at http://www.ruralpoultrymalawi.org/index.html.
